What they don’t want me to say – Poem

what they don’t tell us is that
one plus one is not
confinement.  your life
is no lid to the jam jar, no
swearing off of the
glitterfish upstream.  the
phosphorescent light of the sun
does not debunk the flash
of a night run on an island
when the water
talks in color.  i am
not upset that you love
someone else
more than me.  why is it
that in the unlinking of
adolescence we specialize
in romance as a one-person
affair?  i don’t want to
be your number one.
but i love you all the same.
i want to be one of your numbers.
philos.  philosophy.  i am
a multi-layer lover
raspberries and tugboats
antlers and acceptance
letters.  what they don’t
want me to say is that
it’s okay to crave the company
of someone whose promise
you’re not meant to keep.
love is a weather vane,
a window in an amtrak train
i am going somewhere, and you
are already there.
